Job Summary The Deputy Design Manager (Geotechnical) is responsible for supporting and leading regional geotechnical engineering projects across Southeast Asia, ensuring high-quality technical delivery, compliance, and operational excellence. This role works closely with internal and external stakeholders to manage geotechnical designs, support business development activities, mitigate engineering risks, and drive continuous improvement initiatives while leading and mentoring a team of engineers.
Key Responsibilities
Provide contractual support and advisory services to project teams in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Support and coordinate regional geotechnical engineering projects across Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and other ASEAN countries.
Lead engineering and design activities in compliance with HSEQ methodologies, risk assessments, site rules, and operational procedures.
Assist in managing the geotechnical design team, including technical guidance, mentoring, and capability development.
Collaborate with bid managers, project managers, site teams, and clients to ensure effective integration of geotechnical designs into project execution and construction activities.
Conduct site visits during tender and construction stages to ensure designs are implemented effectively and project requirements are achieved.
Manage client requirements and ensure engineering designs align with project specifications, obligations, and expectations.
Ensure all designs comply with applicable legislation, standards, and engineering codes of practice.
Monitor design deliverables to ensure quality, accuracy, and alignment with project schedules.
Serve as the key technical point of contact for clients and stakeholders on geotechnical engineering matters.
Provide technical input to support business development activities, proposals, and stakeholder engagement initiatives.
Promote engineering quality, good practices, and technical awareness through regular engagement with site teams and personnel.
Conduct geotechnical risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies to address site-specific, environmental, and constructability risks.
Prepare technical investigation reports related to engineering incidents, design issues, or project challenges.
Review project close-out findings and contribute to future improvement and risk reduction strategies.
Drive innovation within the engineering team through adoption of advanced geotechnical technologies, sustainable practices, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Participate in professional industry activities, including technical seminars, paper writing, and global technical expertise groups.
Travel regionally when required to support projects, tenders, and technical operations.
Perform any additional duties assigned by management.
Technical Expertise
Strong technical knowledge in geotechnical engineering design, analysis, and construction support.
Hands-on experience using advanced geotechnical engineering software, including Plaxis.
Sound understanding of engineering legislation, standards, codes of practice, and HSEQ requirements.
Strong project coordination, stakeholder management, and technical communication skills.
Experience in geotechnical risk assessment, mitigation planning, and technical investigations.
Ability to lead engineering teams and manage multidisciplinary project interfaces.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
Knowledge of regional geotechnical engineering practices and project execution within ASEAN markets is an advantage.
Qualifications
Degree in Quantity Surveying, Engineering, Project Management, or a related discipline.
Professional Degree in Civil Engineering with a Master’s Degree in Geotechnical Engineering or related discipline.
Minimum of five (5) years’ relevant working experience within the geotechnical or related engineering industry.
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and motivate teams and stakeholders.
Result-oriented and proactive with the ability to identify issues and implement effective solutions independently.
Strong business awareness and understanding of market practices and external factors affecting engineering design and delivery.
Willingness to travel overseas for short-term project and tender support assignments.
